Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama has announced plans to take legal action after an alleged assault involving members of the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team, widely known as the “Black Maria.” The incident reportedly happened on Saturday evening in Tamale while the artist was returning from mosque with family members in a bus linked to the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art.

According to accounts from Mahama and witnesses, the situation began when officers were trying to clear traffic in the area. Tension rose when some officers reportedly started hitting vehicles. The situation quickly got out of hand, leading to a confrontation. Mahama and his uncle were said to have been injured, with the artist reportedly losing a tooth and needing medical care. They were later taken to Sakasaka Police Station, where further mistreatment was alleged.

Speaking at a press conference on March 23, 2026, Mahama said the issue goes beyond his personal experience. He raised concerns about repeated claims of police misconduct and warned that such actions could affect public trust. “This is not just about me,” he said. “If this can happen to someone like me, what about the ordinary person?” His legal team has called for a full and open investigation into the matter.

In response, the police unit denied the claims, saying the incident happened during a traffic operation involving a driver who did not follow instructions. They also released video footage to support their side. Mahama has questioned the video, saying it may not show the full truth. The case has drawn wide attention both in Ghana and abroad, raising fresh questions about accountability and the safety of citizens.
